This Sunday House was built in 1909 by the current owner's Grandfather, Elias
Rode. He chose this particular lot because of the large oak tree so there would
be shade for his horses when he came to town with his wagon or buggy. The family
would spend the night on Saturdays and attend church and Sunday School the next
day. The house has been in the family for three generations.
The home is two-story with a porch across the front. It's situated on the lot
with the side of the house facing the street in order for the oak tree to shade
the porch. Guests are invited to use the downstairs rooms for their stay. A
large bedroom with seating area is charmingly decorated with curtains of mattress
ticking and tablecloth and dust ruffle to compliment it. A quilt is featured
on the bed. The bright kitchen has all the necessary items for a weekend in
Fredericksburg. It has a family style table. The bath has a tub (you can shower,
too).
The key is there for guests to peek upstairs, but not available for guests
to use. It remains as it was originally used by the family.
This home is charming in decor and ambiance. It's a true feeling of early-day
Fredericksburg. It's an older, quiet residential area with other historic homes
nearby. It's only two blocks from Main Street. And you, too can park your horses
(or car) under the big oak tree. There is also a carport for your use.
The owner of the home is the daughter and niece of two men who were captured
by the Apache Indians. Hermann Lehmann, her uncle was 11 at the time of his
capture and spent over eight years with the Apache and Comanche tribes. Willie
Lehmann, Ms. Lehmann's father was only in captivity for three or four days.
A bit of that history is left for you to enjoy while in the Rode Sunday Haus.
It'll make you want to know more about this fascinating family.
