Joseph and Ruth (Huffman) Baines, maternal
grandparents of President Lyndon Baines Johnson, built their home
here in 1904, following Joseph’s service in the Civil War and a
career as a journalist, Texas Secretary of State, Legislator and
attorney. The couple used prefabricated cement blocks, made locally
by Hugo and Henry Basse, also known as Basse blocks on the exterior
of the home. The widowed Ruth sold the home in 1907, the same year
daughter Rebekah wed Sam Johnson.
Located just four blocks from Main Street main
shopping area and festivals Baine’s House Bed and Breakfast
offers three stories with two comfortable suites. Both suites have a
wonderful array of antiques that have been collected by your hosts
over the years. The upstairs suite even has an antique doll house
that will take you to days past.
Downstairs—There are four rooms
downstairs creating a spacious and comfortable suite for two to six
people. The main bedroom has a king bed, the second has a double and
the den has a sleeper sofa. A tub/shower is found in the private
bathroom.

Upstairs—This is a one room suite that
offers a queen bed with tub/shower in the bathroom. A separate parlor
room is great for reading or just relaxing. Just outside the entrance
of the Upstairs Suite is a great deck with ample seating for guests
to enjoy whether they are enjoying a cup of coffee or soaking in the
sunlight.

Outside is a wonderful array of organic gardens with
everything from flowers to vegetables. Seating areas have been
created for guests to enjoy the gardens and the wonderful morning and
evening air that Fredericksburg has to offer. There is also a fire
pit on the rock patio, which is perfect for our cool fall and winter
evenings.
Your hosts live on the middle (second) floor and
this is where your breakfast will be served at 9:00 am each morning.
