Austin Street Retreat is For Sale. In the Event that the buyer does not continue with the business we will call to change your reservation.
Austin Street Retreat continues to be one of the most frequently photographed
homes in Fredericksburg. Its Fachwork log cabin and limestone walls manifest the
pioneer building techniques that make the pre-Victorian architecture of Fredericksburg
so enduring and pleasing. With an eye for premium quality including fine linens
and custom designed bedding, solid brass fixtures, superior quality whirlpools
and elegant appointments, the Retreat has grown to five suites each with a private
terrace. The yard is beautifully kept and includes many perennials from the LBJ
Ranch. The owners' love of Texas historic architecture and glamorous, comfortable
surroundings all culminate in these five suites. Located in Fredericksburg's National
Historic District, this is a premier property. The immigrant heritage and a European
sense of design and style are a natural combination which provide a truly personal
"Retreat" in the Hill Country. There are five suitesKristins,
Marias, Elis, Annies and El Jefes.
Kristin's - The original settlers' home was ingeniously added on to just two
decades ago but has the feel of the 1800s. As you enter the foyer with wonderful
old D'Hanis tile, a warm sense of history greets you. The bedroom/sitting room
is magnificently large, boasting twenty foot ceilings at the peak. The fireplace
on cold evenings provides a beautiful warmth near the king-size iron bed, whose
design was inspired from a French vegetable basket. At the same time it is graceful
and sturdy and lavishly dressed in velvet and tapestry linens. Along the massive
ceiling beam that separates the bed from the living area is a series of antique
wall sconces with colored crystals that give a warm glow to the romantic ambience.
Kristin's bathroom has a long and colorful history. In 1885, the Sheriff of
Fredericksburg, was our very own John Walter. As the new jail was being built
desperados had to be housed somewhere and where could be better than the Sheriff's
house? Iron bars were added to prevent an early checkout. However, you will
not want to leave when you see the combination of slate floors, limestone walls,
and triangular whirlpool tub.
The large private terrace is reminiscent of a Tuscan plaza. Anchored by an
ancient ivy covered pecan tree and a softly bubbling fountain this is indeed
a magical place. Relaxing and inviting for two, it is also the site of many
gatherings.
