The Austin Street Retreat continues to be one of the most frequently photographed
homes in Fredericksburg. Its Fachwork log cabin and limestone walls manifest the
pioneer building techniques that make the pre-Victorian architecture of Fredericksburg
so enduring and pleasing. With an eye for premium quality including fine linens
and custom designed bedding, solid brass fixtures, superior quality whirlpools
and elegant appointments, the Retreat has grown to five suites each with a private
terrace. The yard is beautifully kept and includes many perennials from the LBJ
Ranch. The owners' love of Texas historic architecture and glamorous, comfortable
surroundings all culminate in these five suites. Located in Fredericksburg's National
Historic District, this is a premier property. The immigrant heritage and a European
sense of design and style are a natural combination which provide a truly personal
"Retreat" in the Hill Country. There are five suitesEl Jefe,
Kristins, Elis, Annies and Marias.
The Spanish word El Jefe best describes the type of person who lived in this
incredible two story house on the grounds of the Austin Street Retreat - the
type of person who would only have a beautiful, luxurious and totally unique
residence. When the owners built this home and named it El Jefe the curious
surmised that it was named after one of the owners who are husband and wife.
It was actually named after a composite of people the owners have met from Texas
to Chicago to Wall Street.
The outside terrace of this space is entered through the antique Moroccan gate
onto an intimate private patio with a rock fountain. Walk into El Jefe through
the traditional Fredericksburg glass door with sidelights covered in Italian
gauze. Walk over the river stone entry onto wall to wall carpeting and sit in
one of the time worn designer chairs that radiate memories of grandiose business
deals and real or imagined love affairs. As you sit in a piece of comfortable
history your view will take in a rock fireplace enveloping a limestone carving
from the entrance of a grand mansion in Chicago. A Fredericksburg cabinet, a
cluttered with treasures 1895 desk from Comfort, an alligator paint buffet and
a king-size French bed with custom linens both designed by the Homestead all
exist comfortably here.
El Jefe's guests are so filled with the feeling of excitement at finding such
a "retreat" they rush up the winding stairs to find another vista.
The second floor is filled with a tile enclosed whirlpool and French doors leading
to a balconette. The railing outside the doors was originally from the Kansas
City Board of Trade (1888) and overlooks the private terrace and waterfall.
One can see from this view one of the "secret" embellishments thoughtfully
planned by the owner for his wife. The terrace rocks form the shape of the state
of Texas.
